Special memories are connected with this particular poem. It was written on May 29,1998 for Inter-District School World Environment Day competition, held on June 06,1998.I don’t think that I had taken poetry writing seriously until I actually won first prize for this one 🙂
In the darkness of the night
Lies the darkness of human’s creating
Which seems so glamorous
But hath no truth in it!!
I sit here and look at the world around me
What I see is not the green trees,
The blue sky and the clear fields,
But the curse of human’s creation.
The gift as they say
To the new generation
They gift as they say
Will brighten up the future.
The gift as they say for which we will thank our ancestors.
The world around me seems so frightening
Specially with this un-destructive Monster
Lying all around me.
Everything around has lost its glory
The glory created by God.
The un-destructive Monster scattered everywhere I see.
Scattered everywhere breeding destruction for thee – My Land!!
The Land that I hold safe in my hands
To pass it down to the new generation.
Oh! Dearly loved land,
Stand still and be prepared to be sacrificed!
Sacrificed for the sake of others,
Others who never loved thee!!
Thy sacrifice will not be long remembered
Cause the master of destruction,
The Human’s own creation,
The gift as they say to the future generation
Moves slowly and steady towards thee.
My memories carry me back
To the days of my childhood,
When the blue sky was the roof of the world
And the green fields the carpet for thee.
Those days when the fragrance of the flowers filled the air
And the green lawns were the blanket for thee
Today thou lie without cover,
Thy delicate skin exposed to the heated rays of light!
And the Monster sits upon thee
Sits watching and laughing at thy helplessness,
While thou pray for our safety.
Oh! Dearly loved Land – be still,
Prepare thyself for death!!
For the Monster’s long hands stretches for thee
The Gift from us has become a curse for thee
And when thou suffer I suffer with thee.
The rain has forgotten its way to thee
Cause thou have changed because of the gift bestowed on thee.
It was meant to be a gift
But how sad thou art with it!!
Because the gift of mankind
Has become a Curse for thee!
